Dear Parents and Carers,
This very different start to the school year has certainly provided us with many opportunities for growth, to learn new skills and develop a good sense of patience and resilience. Thank you for all your support and understanding as we continue to work our way through the significant restrictions that have been put in place to keep us safe.
This week, parents and carers from our Year 1-6 classes have had the opportunity to be part of an online meeting to hear from the class teachers about the year of learning ahead. This is certainly the new norm (for now) as we look to connect, inform and engage our families. We hope you found this a useful and helpful experience and if you were unable to make any of these online meetings, simply contact your child’s teacher and they will be able to send you the link or the slide presentation.
Uniform
As we start the new year, it is important that all our students feel they belong to our school community. One way we look to do this is by having a school uniform. Can I please remind families to make sure your child is wearing the correct uniform each day that is clean and tidy and without additional accessories. We have had a few students wearing a variety of items that are not part of the uniform and will be sending home reminders to families explaining the concern and we would very much appreciate if you could follow this up straight away. Please note we do sell hats in the front office if you require one and if you could label everything this greatly assists us in successfully returning uniform items to the students. I would also like to promote and remind families about our new school sports socks and track suit pants; these are available in the uniform shop and now may be a good chance to purchase these items in time for the cooler weather.
Items to school from home
I would also like to remind all our students about not bringing items to school from home. This includes toys, sporting equipment or any expensive items. We strongly encourage any personal items to stay at home, as they can be a distraction and a major disappointment to the owner if they are lost or broken during their day at school. Thank you for your support in these important matters.
Drop off and Pick Up
With the recent changes to the arrivals and departures of students from our school, we appreciate there is a greater need for some patience as we adjust to how this can operate in a safe and smooth way.
From my observations this week as all students returned, I have noticed a few issues that need to be addressed with our school community.
If you have other family members involved in pick up and drop off would you please inform them about the changes as we are finding that a number of issues are related to drivers being unaware of our rules.
The biggest issues are cars queueing along Birkinshaw Ave and then around the corner into Magill Road which blocks all traffic and causes some motorists to drive onto the wrong side of the road. Please do not queue up in this area. This tends to occur at a couple of peak times, especially in the afternoon. If you are arriving early to collect children, please be aware if you are waiting on a solid yellow line you will be fined by the inspectors from the council. Your best options are to park safely in a correct parking space and walk to collect or to drive around the block and wait for the pick-up area to reduce. There are always teachers on duty until 3:20pm, providing 20 minutes of pick up time for safe collection.
In the morning period, I have been observing parents and carers dropping off students outside the pick-up/drop off zone in unsafe locations. These include before the Emu crossing in Birkinshaw Ave, near the builders entrance and on the opposite side of the street to the school also in Birkinshaw Ave. Please be aware both these areas are no standing/parking zones and parking here may also incur council fines.
Thank you for all your understanding during these changes and please be aware there may be more over the coming weeks as we look forward to the completion of our new yards and entrances.
Kind regards
Adrian Grbin
