Italian T1 Wk 4 2021.jpg

Benvenuti! (Welcome!)

Italian lesssons for 2021 have commenced with much enthusiasm.  The children enjoy learning and singing Italian songs to help them with their language learning.  During these first few weeks, the focus has been on the Italian greetings and courtesies, introducing themselves and telling me a little about themselves, with an emphasis on further developing their speaking skills.

This week we celebrated “Martedì Grasso” – Fat Tuesday, with the sharing of pancakes. This is also the time when “Carnevale” is celebrated in Italy.  This is a celebration where there is music, dancing, colourful parades and costumes.  In Italy, in particular Venezia at this time, lots of amazing and elaborate masks can be seen.  During the remainder of the term, our Italian language and culture learning will focus on the topic of “Pasqua” – Easter.

Reading Workshop

Once again, we have been fortunate to have Literacy Consultant, Linda Clune lead a Reading Workshop for parents.  On Wednesday afternoon Linda spoke to parents about current research relating to brain development, reading pathways and how children learn to read.  Linda is leading teachers in the use of decodable readers as a tool to teach children to read, phonemic awareness and the importance of oral language development.  During the time we have been working with Linda, we have seen a significant shift in the reading development of our students.

Linda generously offered to allow me to record her workshop and provide a link to anyone who was unable to attend.  If you would like to request the link please email either Angela or Glenda.

2FC Mask Making 2021.jpg

On Monday afternoon, 2FC visited their Buddy Class, 4/5RM. The children worked with their Buddies to make masks for Carnevale. Carnevale is a traditional Italian festival which takes place just before Ash Wednesday. It is similar to a big final party before Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent. People wear masks and the streets are filled with music and entertainment. The Early Years classes had a mask parade to celebrate Carnevale where the children enjoyed parading with their masks.

Bread Tags Collection 2021.jpg

Bread Tags for Wheelchairs

Can You Help?

We have a new bread tag collection bin in the office. This is just one of the many ways we promote sustainability and recycling in our school.

If you have bread tags at home or know someone who owns a shop or café please help us turn these little bits of plastic into beautiful recycled bowls by bringing the tags to school to be collected. This will help raise funds to buy wheelchairs for those in need. We need 20kg to help fund one wheelchair.  We can do it!  To find out more check out their website.  http://ozbreadtagsforwheelchairs.org.au/
