Dear Parents and Carers,
Last week was Catholic Education Week across South Australia where all schools celebrated the excellent teaching and learning that happens in our schools every day. You might like to visit our socials to see what the students had to say about our school. It is wonderful to reflect and recognise the teaching and learning that takes place. Thank you to everyone in our school community that makes our school a wonderful place to belong.
I would like to inform our school community of an important event this term and encourage you to save the date. On Wednesday 5 July we are inviting families to our Learning Showcase Afternoon. Parents and carers will be able to visit the classrooms and see the wonderful learning that has taken place over the term. The school will be opened from 3pm – 5pm so all can attend during this time period.
Last week was also National Pedestrian and Road Safety for Children week. This important week is to help children learn about road safety by modelling safe behaviour and teaching children safety skills. Until the age of 11-12 years, children need active adult supervision near roads. It is important for all to understand the need to correctly model the road rules and explain and describe what you are doing each time you are using the road, so that your child can understand why it is important.
During the holiday break the council has assisted us with making improvements to our drop off and pick up zone. The improvements include;
· extending the zone to make it safer and allow more cars to use the zone
· refreshing the line markings for easy identification
· changing the signage with improved parking times and reminding drivers to not queue from the Emu crossing up around to Magill Road.
The main road safety issue is when parents/carers queue in Birkinshaw Ave from the Emu Crossing back to and around the corner onto Magill Road during the afternoon pick up time from 3pm – 3:15pm.
All parents and carers – please be aware that you are not allowed to stop and wait on a solid yellow line as this will incur a fine from the inspectors.
If the pick-up and drop off zone is full of cars you will need to continue travelling along Birkinshaw Ave and round the block until the zone is clear. Recently the council have been issuing fines and we have had complaints from other motorists using Birkinshaw Avenue. To make it safe for all, I strongly advise drivers to follow the rules so that everyone can use this road safely.
Please pass this important information to family members and friends who may be collecting your child at the end of the school day.
Alternatively, if you do come a little later to collect children, we find the zone is not as busy after 3:10pm. Staff are on duty until 3:15pm when the school gates are closed and students who have not been collected are taken to OSHC.
